Week 5
Wiwrestling.com Wrester of the Week
By Brad Baker
Week 5
For those of you that attended the Cheesehead this
past weekend, you probably agree with me that even a third or fifth place
finish could have warranted a wrestler of the week nomination. That’s
just how good the wrestling was. However, I’ll narrow it down to the most
qualified nominees. If you would like to make a nomination for the
following week, please drop me an email at
Bbaker@wiwrestling.com. When making nominations, please include
recent victories of notice and scores as well.
Josh Hansen, Wisconsin Rapids, 112, Sr
Josh won arguably the toughest weight this past
weekend at the Cheesehead, a weight that including him had three state
champions in it. After winning his pool, he defeated Vince Hannon of
Montini in a 3-2-overtime thriller. Hannon placed fourth in Illinois last
season as a sophomore. Josh then defeated two-time defending division two
state champion Brian Barbiaux of Luxemburg-Casco 11-6 in the championship
bout. Barbiaux had previously beaten Alex Meger, a Minnesota state
champion from Owatonna, 3-2 in the semifinals. Barbiaux and Meger entered
the tournament as the 16th and 8th ranked wreslters
respectively at 112 pounds in the nation according to WIN-Magazine.
Hansen’s victory raises his record to 18-0 and he is currently ranked
number one in the state.
Other Nominees:
Kevin Tritz, Wisconsin Rapids, 145, Jr
Kevin defeated three ranked wrestlers on his way to
winning the 145-pound Cheesehead bracket. In the final pool round, he won
by a major decision against Mineral Point’s Danny Sullivan, the eight
ranked wrestler in division three. Then in the semifinals, Tritz defeated
the third ranked wrestler in division one, Jacob Wagner of Milton, also by
a major decision. And finally, Kevin defeated Wrightstown’s Mitch Nooyen
7-4 in the championship match. Nooyen is ranked second in division
three. Tritz’s record currently lies at 20-1.
Max Askren, Hartland-Arrowhead, 189, Sr
In a match-up between two nationally
ranked wrestlers, Max came out with a 2-0 victory over Mike Mucha of
Montini in the championship. Max entered as the fifth ranked wrestler in
the nation and Mucha entered as the 16th ranked according to
WIN-Magazine. Previously, Max pinned Luxemburg-Casco’s Jon Treml, ranked
third in division two, in the semi-finals. Max’s record is currently
19-0.
Jordan Hein, Wausau West, HWT, Sr
Jordan defeated Medford’s Joe Poehls 5-2 to take the
Cheesehead heavyweight championship. Both Hein and Poehls are returning
state finalists. In the semifinals, Jordan pinned third ranked Alex
Gibson of Milton in 0:18. The victories elevated his season record to
22-0 and he is currently the number one ranked wrestler in the state.
Malachi Root, Green Bay Preble/East, 112, Fr
Malachi went 5-0 this weekend at the West Bend
Invitational raising his record to 26-0 on the season. In his finals
bout, he defeated the number one ranked 103-pounder in division three,
Drew Hammond of Random Lake 8-4. Both wrestlers entered the match
undefeated. Malachi’s efforts earned him the tournaments most outstanding
wrestler award.
NOTE: There are many others that I understand deserve
a spot at least as nominees. For future weeks, please send in your nominees by
Monday night. Be sure to include the wrestlers full name, high school,
coaches name and number and the wrestlers recent accomplishments,
including significant recent wins/accomplishments.
