Week 3 “Wrestler of the Week”
Cade Sarbacker,
Iowa-Grant, 125, So.
Cade defeated two of the state’s best wrestlers this
past weekend at the Wisconsin Rapids Duals. In Round 2, he defeated our
#1 ranked division two 125-pounder, Joey Cuarenta of Adams-Friendship
15-12. Cuarenta was a state finalist last year at 125 pounds. In the
final round of the duals, he defeated Jared Jaminski of Wisconsin Rapids
11-5. Jaminski is currently ranked 5th in the state at 125
pounds. Cade placed third at the state championships last season as a
freshman and is currently ranked 2nd at 125 pounds in division
three.
Other Nominees:
Eric Enderby, Luxemburg-Casco, 140, Sr
Eric defeated two state qualifiers in the process of
winning the 140-pound Marty Loy Invite championship. In the semifinals,
he defeated Port Washington’s Kevin Barber 7-6 before pinning Kewaskum’s
Nick Bartley in the championship bout. The victories earned Eric the
Invite’s Most Valuable Wrestler Award. Barber placed sixth at state last
year in division one at 130 pounds and Bartley placed third at state in
division two at 140 pounds. Enderby is a two-time state qualifier placing
fifth last season at 135 pounds.
Zach Eigenbrodt, Fond du Lac, 189, Sr.
Zach defeated Marshall Witkowski of Plymouth 8-6 in
overtime of the Marty Loy Invite 189 pound championship bout. Witkowski,
who placed fifth in the state last year, entered the match as the second
ranked 189-pounder in division one. The victory puts Eigenbrodt at 13-0
on the season.
Kevin Lackas, Fond du Lac, 215, Sr.
Kevin defeated two ranked wrestlers on his way to
earning a Marty Loy Invite championship. Kevin, who entered the Invite as
the fourth seed, defeated Denmark’s Mike Kudick 12-8 in the semifinals
before outlasting Ripon’s Blake Roemer 7-4in the final bout. Kudick and
Roemer are ranked 4th and 6th respectively in
Division two at 215-pounds.
Spencer Peterson, Green Bay West/Southwest, 112,
Jr.
Spencer defeated Brown Deer’s Brandon Kircher in the
112-pound championship of the Kewaunee Invite. Kircher placed fourth at
state last season at 103 pounds in division two. The victory raises his
record to 16-0 for the season. Spencer was named the most valuable
wrestler earlier in the season at the Brillion Invite.
David Copp, Oostburg, 119, Sr
David won a loaded 119-pound bracket that featured
four state qualifiers including him. He defeated Lomira’s Tim McGill in
the semi-finals before defeating Ryan Vosters of Freedom in the
Championship. Copp qualified at 119 pounds in division three last year,
where as McGill and Vosters qualified in division two at 112 and 103
respectively.
Andrew Budi, Kaukauna, 160, Jr
Andrew defeated Riverdale’s Anthony Spies in the
finals of the Richland Center Invite. Budi, who entered the tournament
seeded fourth, increased his record to 12-1. Spies placed fifth in the
state at 145 pounds in division three last season.
Week 2 Late Nominee
Joe Mabry, Unity, 140, Sr
On
December 11th, Joe defeated last years 140-pound division two
state champion, Jon Lechleitner of Stanley-Boyd, 4-3 in the championship
of the Barron Invite. Mabry, a two-time division three state runner-up,
earned his 100th career victory two days earlier.
NOTE: There are many others that I understand deserve
a spot at least as nominees. For future weeks, please send in your nominees by
Monday night. Be sure to include the wrestlers full name, high school,
coaches name and number and the wrestlers recent accomplishments,
including significant recent wins/accomplishments.
