Schmidt and Bautista Move On to Day Two of NCAA Championships

Warhawk wrestlers, Jon Schmidt and Austin Bautista move on to the second day of competition at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III championships. See the Whitewater Championship website for more information.

Schmidt literally took down the competition in the 285 weight class with a 2-1 overtime upset decision over undefeated top seed Mark Corsello of Elmhurst College. Schmidt's momentum from the big first round win propelled him to a 7-2 decision over eighth seed, Augsburg's Andrew Witzel (27-10). Day two of the championships has Schmidt facing fifth seed John Helgerson of Wartburg (27-5).

Bautista started the 141 pound competition with a 6-4 first round decision over NYU's Gregg Martino (15-6). A close 2-1 decision in the favor Ithaca's Jeremy Stierly (34-4) recorded Bautista's first loss of the double elimination competition. However, Bautista came back with a 4-3 decision over fifth seed Ben Anderson (28-7) from Concordia, MN. He is now matched up against Ryan Bridge (19-3) wrestling for Stevens Institute of Technology to begin day two.

Latella, wrestling at 197, suffered a quick first round pin in just 1:14 against Wartburg's number five seed Byron Tate (35-7). A second round 8-5 decision over Michael Burke of Wabash (24-7) kept him in the running but sixth seed from Mount Union, Bill Schindel (22-3), cut Latella's tournament short with a 13-4 major decision.

Schmidt and Bautista will move on to the second day of competition in the NCAA Division III championships.

UW Whitewater Wrestling Preview
Ryan Lyke
Issue date: 2/18/09 Section: WEB EXTRAS

The last time a team other than UW-Stevens Point or UW-La Crosse won a WIAC championship was 1992.

However, the Warhawk wrestling team will look to change that result Feb. 22 in Oshkosh.

The 'Hawks, who were not defeated by a Division III opponent all season, won the regular season title with a 5-0-1 conference record and are the highest ranked WIAC team in the nation.

Although the 'Hawks enter the conference tournament without a regular season loss, La Crosse and Stevens Point, who finished 5-1 and 4-1-1, respectively, are still powerhouses.

"Traditionally, for the past about 15 years it has been La Crosse and Point one and two every year," head coach Tim Fader said. "We beat La Crosse, and we tied against Point, so we know we are close."

While senior Pat Nagel, ranked No. 9 at 165 pounds, and junior Jon Schmidt, ranked No. 6 at 285, have been battling injuries, Fader said they are healthy for the tournament.

"By this time in the year, everyone has some dings, but as a team we are at about 100 percent health for everyone," Fader said.

Fader explained the 'Hawks' grueling schedule could give them a boost during the day-long tournament.

"We've seen a variety of teams and wrestled in a variety of different places this year," Fader said. "We saw a lot of high level teams, wrestling against some Division I and Division II opponents. I was very happy with our schedule."

To prepare for the end of the season, the 'Hawks have changed their training routine. The 'Hawks have shortened their practices but are going more intense with shorter and quicker intervals.

"We've talked all year about how we are on a mountain climb to the top," Fader said. "We have related it to wrestling by saying it's not just one person who gets to the top, it takes a team effort."

Overall, the 'Hawks went 16-3-1 during the regular season. The team also features great depth with four wrestlers ranked in the National Wrestling Coaches Association individual rankings: Nagel, Schmidt, No. 3-ranked senior Karl Voeck, at 197, and junior Austin Bautista, the No. 1-ranked wrester at 141 pounds.

Those four are all expected to compete for individual crowns and a trip to nationals.

Bautista, who has made his national championship ambitions clear, has big aspirations for the tournament.

"Anything less than a title will be a disappointment to me," Bautista said. "I've worked pretty hard all year, and it would be a failure if I don't."

He said the turning point in his season was after he fell to University of Indiana senior Andrae Hernandez, 4-0.

"The loss against Indiana really put me back into my place, and it humbled me," Bautista said.
