Greetings Pointer Wrestling Fans:
Well, the season is completed and the Pointers finished 20th at the NCAA
tournament. It was a rough season for the UWSP Wrestling team as we began the
year with virtually all new starters in the lineup. We graduated all of our
National team points and were in search of leadership early. As we fought
through the season the biggest setback had to be all of the injuries the team
endured. But, we managed to finish 2nd in the WIAC tournament and qualify 4
wrestlers to the National tournament.
NCAA Tournament:
The first day was a rough day for the Pointers as all four of our qualifiers
lost their first match. Jake Calhoun was defeated by the #7 seed by riding time,
Eric Bath lost to the #2 seed, Craig Bollig dropped his match to the #3 seed,
and #6 seed Tyler Wozniak lost to the eventual runner-up at 197. Calhoun and
Wozniak managed a win their next round while Bollig lost a hard fought battle on
a questionable call to Jay Figgins of Loras. Calhoun and Wozniak then dropped
their next matches, both to eventual All-Americans. The highlight of the weekend
for Pointer fans was watching Eric Bath battle through the consolations to claim
All-American honors by finishing 3rd at 174. Bath wrestled with great intensity
and avenged his first round loss with a victory over #2 seed Robbie Gotreau of
Augsburg.

The Pointer Wrestling team would also like to express our sincere thanks to all
the fans and family members who came down to support our team. A special thanks
goes out to Anette White for all of her help with the social, setting up hotel
rooms, and for providing food for our fans (and of course hungry wrestlers).
Many of the boys also enjoyed food from Karin Ison and they extend their thanks
as well. There are really too many people to recognize for their support and
contribution, but we are all very grateful for your support.
We now move into the recruiting stage of the season and start to look forward to
next season. We have very strong feelings that the UWSP Pointer Wrestling team
is ready to take it to the next level. We hope all of you will be with us for
the trip.
Thanks!!

Greetings Pointer Wrestling Fans:
Well, the end of the 2006-07 season is nearing and the Pointer will be heading
to Iowa (again) for the NCAA tournament. The guys just completed the WIAC
Championships and finished 2nd for the fifth straight year. The Pointers crowned
two champions and earned two at large bids to send a total of 4 wrestlers to the
National tournament. Jake Calhoun (Plover, WI) started the team off with a pin
in the 125 pound finals to earn his first conference title. Tyler Wozniak
(Stanley, WI) then took the championship at 197 with a 4-0 victory in the
finals. Tyler shut out both of his opponents on the way to his championship in
arguably the toughest weight class in the tournament. His performance earned him
the John Peterson Outstanding wrestler of the meet. Craig Bollig (Verona, WI)
finished 2nd at 184 and Eric Bath (Pulaski, WI) finished 3rd at 174 to each earn
a bid to the NCAA’s.

The trip to Nationals this year will be especially exciting with Marty Loy also
being inducted into the NWCA Div. III Hall of Fame the Thursday before the
tournament begins. We hope many of you can come down for both Marty’s induction
and to support the four Pointers competing in the National tournament.
Thanks for your support!

Greetings Pointer wrestling fans:
The Pointers suffered their first losses of the season last weekend at Dubuque
dropping their national ranking to #19 from #14. After reeling off 8 straight
victories, including 3 wins over ranked opponents, the Pointer fell to the
University of Dubuque in a hard fought 24-17 loss. Before heading to Iowa for
the weekend the Pointers defeated UW-Platteville at home. Platteville came into
Berg gym on the heels of a big victory over UW-La Crosse. But UWSP made a couple
of lineup adjustments and had big wins from Nate Kurszewski and Tyler Wozniak to
down the Pioneers 20-17. The Pointers then headed south to take on 11th ranked
Buena Vista, Dubuque, and NAIA power house William Penn (4th ranked in NAIA).
UWSP had a huge pin by Jered Kern at 133 to seal the victory over BV. Kern
pinned #2 ranked Justin Hulegaard in the 2nd period in a tight 2-1 match. Also
winning a big match against BV was Craig Bollig. Bollig moved up from 184 and
defeated #4 ranked Ben Strandberg. The Pointers then fell to Dubuque and also to
William Penn. William Penn jumped out to early leads in many of the matches and
the Pointers were not able to make up the spread to record victories.
The Pointers are now 8-2 as they prepare to travel to La Crosse to take on #6
ranked UW-La Crosse. The Eagles have 4 wrestlers ranked individually with 3 of
them being ranked #1. However, this will be the first time this year that the
Pointer will have a full lineup. Up to this point they have been spotting teams
at least 6 points in each match.
The UW-Stevens Point/UW-La Crosse match will be televised on FSN North at 6:30
PM on December 21st. So, if you are not able to make it to the match you can
tune in for the excitement on the 21st.
Happy Holidays and thanks for the support.

Greetings Pointer wrestling fans:
The season is in full swing and the Pointers are off to a good start. The first
competition for the Dawgs was at home in the Pointer Open. Leading the pack were
freshmen Dennis Reckelberg (Luxemberg/Casco) and Chris Karl (Auburndale). Karl
finished 3rd at 165-silver while Reckelberg finished 2nd at 174-silver. In the
gold division, the Pointers had two strong finishes at 184. Tyler Wozniak
(Stanley/Boyd) defeated Craig Bollig (Verona) in a very hard fought double
overtime match to finish 3rd & 4th. Josh Ison (Antigo) took the long way back to
5th at 165 going 5-2 on the day.
After a little stumble in an exhibition against Itasca, the Pointers bounced
back with 5 straight dual wins. The first official dual meet competition came at
the Olivet duals. Despite forfeiting 2 weights all day the Pointers managed to
come away 4-0. Their big win came in the second round when they defeated #13
ranked Olivet 24-21. Josh Ison, Eric Bath (Pulaski), Tyler Wozniak, & Mitch
Szwet (Coleman) all went 4-0 on the day. Complete results can be found at:
http://www.olivetcollege.edu/sports/wr_duals06/match_schedule.htm
Craig Bollig also added a big win that weekend at the Concordia Open with a 1st
place finish. He also defeated #8 ranked Jay Figgins from Loras in the
quarter-finals. Karl & Reckelberg also turned in strong performances finishing
one match from the placing round.
The Pointers rounded out the last two weeks with a 28-21 victory over Lakeland
College. Again dealing with injuries the Pointers forfeited 2 weight classes,
but won 6 of the 8 matches wrestled. The Dawgs were fueled by the strong start
from Eric Bath who recorded a pin in the first period. Complete results are at:
http://www.uwsp.edu/athletics/wrestling/2006-07/Lakeland.htm
Finally, the Pointers will begin their home schedule with conference opponent
UW-Oshkosh. Oshkosh comes into the match with a big win over Platteville and a
top 30 ranking. The Pointers are currently ranked #14 nationally. The dual will
be in Quandt Gym at 7:00 PM.
Thanks for the support.

Hi everyone,
We are just around the corner from the first day of school. We are looking
forward to seeing the guys and getting on the mat again. I hope everyone has
enjoyed their summer. We will be updating our e-mail list soon and begin with
out updates during the first or second week of school.
As a reminder, we are hosting our annual Pointer Wrestling Golf Outing on
Saturday, Sept. 9th. Obviously it is coming up very soon. We hope to pick up
more golfers in the last week, so if you would like to play, please let us know
ASAP. If you plan on playing and haven’t sent in your registration, please get
in touch with myself or Yan. We are having the after golf dinner and social at
Rusty’s Backwater Saloon. If you plan to golf and would like to ride the bus
from Rusty’s to the golf course, we are planning on leaving Rusty’s around 9:30
AM. Our first tee time at Indian Head golf course is 11:15. Again, please let us
know if you are planning on attending and have not sent your registration in.
Thanks for the support.
