Harold Nichols/Cyclone Open Results for UW-L
By
Billy Huebner, UW-L Head Assistant Wrestling Coach
The UW-L
wrestling team competed at the Harold Nichols/Cyclone Open on
Saturday, November 13, at Iowa Central Community College in Fort
Dodge, Iowa. Participating schools included Division I Iowa State,
Northern Iowa, University of Nebraska - Lincoln, and Utah Valley
State; Division II University of Nebraska - Omaha and South Dakota
State University; Division III University of Wisconsin - La Crosse,
Buena Vista, and Wartburg; NAIA William Penn; and junior colleges
Iowa Central and Ellsworth Community College. After all was done, it
proved to be a very tough tournament. Six wrestlers placed in the
top seven for the Eagles.
Jason
Lulloff (Kiel, WI)
led the way
as he captured the 184 lb. division with a 4-0 record. A big win
came in the semi-finals for Jason as he defeated University of
Nebraska - Lincoln’s Matt Farrell 2-1 to put him in the finals. It
was a battle as both wrestlers were very tall. Jason then faced
Akeem Carter, Wartburg’s 2x National Champion ranked #1 at 197 lbs.
Jason came out with a takedown in the first period and totally
controlled the entire match. This was a big win for him and a fun
match to watch. This tournament was an important one for Jason, as
it was his first since coming back from a season-ending injury last
year where doctors told him he might never wrestle again. Jason is
on a mission and he will not be satisfied until he wins a National
Championship.
Josh
Chelf (Irma, WI)
placed
second at 174 lbs. with a 4-1 record for UW-L. Josh had a great
first tournament of the year and was very impressive out on the mat.
A big win came in the quarter-finals for him, as he shut out Iowa
State’s Jonathon Gupinski by a score of 6-0. In the semi-finals, he
defeated South Dakota State’s standout wrestler Nathan Althoff by a
score of 8-3. Josh then faced the University of Nebraska - Lincoln’s
Brandon Browne in the finals. This was an intense match and quite
the crowd pleaser. In the last 30 seconds of the third period, Josh
got a takedown at the edge of the mat, putting him ahead by a score
of 4-3. However, in the last 10 seconds, Browne was able to reverse
Josh to secure his victory. After the match, Josh just shook his
head and said, “I’ll get him next time.” Hopefully they’ll meet
again this weekend at the UNO Open.
Ryan
Allen (Livingston, WI)
finished
third at 285 lbs. with a 4-1 record. Ryan’s first win came against
South Dakota State’s Jason Stripling by a score of 5-1, followed by
a win over Northern Iowa’s Mike Zimmerly by a score of 5-2. Ryan had
a tough semi-finals where he was defeated by Blake Gillis of
Wartburg, who he had wrestled twice in the NCAA Championship finals
and defeated both times. Unfortunately, this tournament was a
different story as Gillis defeated Ryan by a score of 1-0. It was a
hard loss for Ryan, but Gillis wrestled tough. They could meet again
next week at the UNO Open -- it would be a great rematch. Ryan came
back to place third by defeating Iowa State’s David Zabriskie with a
fall in 0:48 seconds and Stefan Tighe of Nebraska Lincoln by a score
of 7-5.
Ross
Needham (Marshfield, WI)
placed
fourth in the tough 157 lb. division. A big win came for him against
Division I Utah Valley State’s Tanner Cowen with a 7-2 victory,
allowing him to advance to the quarter-finals. There Ross dominated
Claudel Noel of Ellsworth Community College by a score of 14-4. This
win meant that he would wrestle the fourth ranked Trent Paulson of
Iowa State in the semifinals. Ross wrestled a smart and intense
match against Paulson. Paulson had two takedowns -- one in the first
period and one in the second. The third period was scoreless as they
were both battling back and forth. This proved to be a great match
for Ross with his unfortunate loss by a score of 5-1. Ross then
received an injury default against #1 ranked Division II Patrick
Allibone of the University of Nebraska - Omaha, which was too bad
because it would have been a great match to watch. Ross then
wrestled the University of Northern Iowa’s Moza Fay for third place.
Ross had a great first period of wrestling, winning 3-0. In the
second period, Fay chose down. A major scramble at the edge of the
mat in the second period was a decisive factor in this match. Fay
came out on top for the reversal, and then they went out of bounds.
We did not want to give up this reversal, as Fay is a vicious rider.
Ross went down and got caught in a cradle. This was a hard loss for
Ross against a very tough wrestler, ending in a fall by Fay in 3:46.
Tim
Palmer (Mankato, MN)
was fifth at
165 lbs. for the Eagles with a 4- 2 record. Tim is exploding this
year and wrestled a great tournament. In his first match, Tim
defeated Ryan Meyer of South Dakota State by a score of 6-4 in
overtime. He then defeated Utah Valley’s Mark South by a score of
11-3. In the quarter-finals, Tim was defeated by J.D. Naig of Omaha
Nebraska, the #1 ranked wrestler in the country in Division II. It
was an intense batter throughout the entire match, with the score
ending in a 4-4 tie. Unfortunately, Tim fell to Naig in overtime by
a fall. He then defeated Iowa State’s Mike Somsky by a score of 4-2.
Tim’s last match against Ross Taplin of Nebraska - Omaha, a
nationally known up-andcoming wrestler in Division II, was also very
exciting. At the start of the match, Tim was put to his back from a
tight headlock. It was amazing how he got out of it, but he was now
down by five points. Although he was unable to come back for the
win, he battled to the very end, losing by a score of 5-1. Tim is
coming off of a 23-5 record last year. He is looking to get over
thirty wins this year.
Collin
McKillip (Marion, IL)
placed
seventh in the 157 lb. division with 4-2 record. He had three falls
in the tournament including Chase Guddis of UW-La Crosse in 3:59;
Busse of Iowa Central Community College in 1:03; and Claudel Noels
of Ellsworth Community College in 1:03. Collin had some exciting
matches for the crowd and for our fans. He really stepped it up for
this tournament. Despite an injury early in the tournament, he still
stormed back to compete. Other wrestlers competing for UW-L included
Oscar
Martinez
0-2 (125
lbs.);
Jordan
Kolinski

lbs.);

Josh
Zabel
2-2 (174
lbs.);
Dave

0-2 (197
lbs.); and
Josh
Passe
1-1 (197
lbs.). It was a very exciting day for the Eagles. The program is
really looking forward to going to the Nebrask Omaha Open this
weekend. Some of the teams that participated in that tournament last
year include University of Nebraska - Lincoln, University of
Minnesota, Oklahoma State, Iowa, Iowa State, Hofstra, West Virginia,
and Northern Iowa. Also coming this year will be Virginia Tech. It
should be a real barn burner. For those of you are unable to join
the team, we will forward you the results next week.
