  UW-Eau Claire edged UW-Platteville 23-21 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference wrestling match Wednesday in Williams Field house.
The Blugolds improved to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the WIAC, while the Pioneers fell to 4-12, 1-2.
The match literally went down to the Wire, as the Blugolds' Tony Antuono beat Dustin Wire 13-4 to clinch the victory. Troy Seubert scored a reversal at the buzzer to win at 184, while Larry Moen beat Tom Venner 4-3 in double overtime at 197 and Dave Vanevenhoven nipped Adam Anderson 5-4 at 149. Heavyweight Paul Lundgren won on a pin in 1:22, while Derek Sikora scored a major decision at 165.
UWP's Zach Chambers remained undefeated with a pin at 133 pounds, while Ken Francois edged Matt Renkas 5-4 at 157 pounds. The Pioneers also won two matches by forfeit.

WRESTLERS EDGED BY ST. JOHN'S

COLLEGEVILLE, MN - Scoring the final 12 points of the evening, the UW-Eau Claire wrestling team fell just short in a 21-19 dual match defeat by St. John's here tonight at Sexton Arena.

Down 21-7 with three matches to go, the Blugolds dominated the upper weight classes to take the final three matches of the evening.

Davey Starks (Sr.-Stoughton) got the Blugolds on the board as he major decisioned Nate Schraan 8-0 at 125 pounds. Falling behind 18-4, Chris Muller (Sr.-Rochester, MN/John Marshall) started the Blugold rally by scoring a 10-4 decision over Nathan Burr at 157.

Greg Burzynski (Jr.-Stanley/Stanley-Boyd) battled Nate Slinkard at 165 to a 3-3 tie at the end of the third period before Slinkard scored a takedown in overtime to win the match.

Troy Seubert (Jr.-Maple Grove, MN) began the Blugold rally with a 4-2 victory over Dan Willaert at 174 pounds. Josh Frie (Sr.-Mondovi) scored some much-needed points pinning Chris Dykhoff at 3:43.

Adam Kolo (Sr.-Vespers/Wis. Rapids Lincoln) totaled four takedowns in an 11-4 defeat of Aaron Barthel at 197.

The Blugolds are off until December 3 when they travel to Decorah, Iowa to take on the eighth-ranked Luther College Norse. Action is set to begin at 7:00 PM.

STARKS NAMED WIAC WRESTLER OF THE WEEK

MADISON - UW-Eau Claire wrestler Davey Starks (Sr.-Stoughton) was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week, it was announced today by conference sports information director Matt Stanek.

Starks won first place honors at the Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open hosted by Augsburg College in the 125 pound weight class. He defeated his first round opponent by fall at 4:47, then upended Corey Kalina of Wartburg (Iowa), 7-1, and Travis Halpin of Jamestown (ND), 12-3. Starks beat Greg Brendenmuehl of Augsburg (Minn.), 9-4, to win the title.
